BLOOD & WATER // MARCH 2024

You can sense the sweat and tears singer-songwriter Mangione put in his latest album, produced by Larry Campbell, the late Levon Helm's Grammy-winning music director and producer, and Bob Dylan's former guitarist. Campbell gives these 11 Americana tracks a warm glow, but it's Mangione's impassioned lyrics, pleading for strength despite life's pains on "Spirit Awake" for instance, that shine brightest.

Backstory: This song is a plea for reconciliation. Sometimes in a relationship we can find ourselves at an impasse; A place in a relationship when all of the arguing, defending, and excuses are done, and we can see the pain and damage left behind. Backstory: This song is a plea for reconciliation. Sometimes in a relationship we can find ourselves at an impasse; A place in a relationship when all of the arguing, defending, and excuses are done, and we can see the pain and damage left behind. Here, the only way forward is to reach and think outside of ourselves, toward our loved one. We lay our drawbridge down and invite the other to meet us halfway. We surrender ourselves to their Mercy and wait in the shadows of our faults. It is a hard place to dwell but one that is every bit a part of authentic love. I want this song to be affirmation for those waiting in that darkness as well as an invitation for the significant other to make that journey to meet them.

You Didn't Come Here Alone

I wanted to put together a collection of verse vignettes that exemplified the broken, self indulgent and merciless state of today’s culture; Tied together by a hopeful chorus that acknowledges that we are all in this thing together. Our human dignity outweighs personal ideologies. Acknowledgment and reverence of this reality is the necessary first

Mike Mangione began playing guitar at 13 & later joined forces with his brother as Mike Mangione & the Kin. ‘The Turnabout’, his latest alt/indie folk track, was inspired by a frozen river he came across as he drove to his studio. “Although it is a seasonal occurrence, I was struck by the fact that I live in a place where rushing rivers freeze! I quickly penned on scrap paper ‘I come from the land where the rivers freeze’. When I arrived at my studio space I wrote this song out in one sitting, which is very rare for me. The song reflects on the reality that, though our identities are deeply rooted in our place of origin, our home is defined by love. Even if I dwell in a place I have roots, I am without a home if I am not surrounded by those I love.” The track features collaborators Larry Campbell, Justin Guip (Bob Dylan/Levon Helm) & Byron Isaacs (Lumineers). Mangione’s music has been featured widely & has been highly acclaimed by Huffington Post, Relix Magazine, and Cowboys & Indians.
